Imaging Exams
At Stony Brook Imaging and Radiology, we specialize in providing comprehensive imaging services tailored to meet your unique healthcare needs. From preventive screenings to advanced diagnostic procedures, our cutting-edge technology and skilled radiology team ensure precise results. Explore the wide range of imaging exams we offer to support your health and well-being.
Bone Density (DEXA) Scans
Bone density scans, also known as DEXA, measure your bone mineral density (BMD) to assess bone health and fracture risk. Our DEXA scans are:
- Accurate and informative: We compare your BMD to a reference group based on age, weight, sex and ethnicity.
- Used as a diagnostic tool: Commonly used to detect osteopenia and osteoporosis, conditions that affect bone strength.
- Part of comprehensive care: Helps your doctor evaluate your bone status and develop a personalized care plan.
CT Scan
A CT scan, also known as a CAT scan, uses advanced imaging technology to create detailed, cross-sectional images of the body. Our CT services offer:
- Detailed imaging: Clear views of bones, blood vessels and soft tissues for more exact diagnoses.
- Advanced technology: Combines multiple X-ray images with computer processing for enhanced detail.
- Comprehensive care: Ideal for diagnosing a wide range of conditions with accuracy and efficiency.
Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is a specialized X-ray technique using real-time imaging and contrast media to evaluate the body in motion, such as tracking how material moves through the stomach. Common fluoroscopy exams include barium enemas, esophagrams, small bowel series, upper gastrointestinal series and voiding cystourethrograms. Features include:
- Real-time visualization: Monitoring the movement of instruments or contrast agents within the body.
- Dynamic imaging: Capturing detailed images of internal structures in motion for precise evaluations.
- Advanced technology: Ensuring accurate and efficient diagnostic procedures.
Mammography
A mammography is a specialized imaging exam that uses low-dose X-rays to detect and diagnose breast conditions, including cancer. We provide advanced mammography services to support both screening and diagnostic needs. Key features include:
- 3D Digital mammography: State-of-the-art imaging technology offered free of charge at all Stony Brook Medicine breast imaging centers.
- Comprehensive care: Screening and diagnostic imaging performed by expert radiologists.
- Collaborative expertise: Direct affiliation with the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center for seamless access to minimally-invasive, image-guided breast biopsies and MRI breast imaging.
MRI
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a safe and advanced imaging technique that uses powerful magnets and radio waves (no X-rays) to create detailed images of the body. We offer:
- Soft tissue imaging: Ideal for distinguishing healthy tissue from diseased or injured tissue.
- Contrast options: In some cases, a contrast dye may be used to enhance image clarity.
- Comfort and safety: Our MRI Suite at Stony Brook University Hospital features spacious, patient-friendly rooms with wide-bore Siemens 3T and 1.5T scanners for maximum comfort, even for patients with mild claustrophobia or larger body types. Technologists and nurses provide personalized care, and our PACS system ensures fast, accurate image access for radiologists and referring physicians.
- Convenient locations: MRI services are available at multiple Stony Brook locations, making advanced imaging accessible for hospitalized and outpatient patients alike.
PET/CT Scans
PET/CT scans are advanced imaging technology that combines functional data with detailed images of organs, muscles and other structures. PET/CT scans can help our skilled team with:
- Early detection: Identify and diagnose some cancers earlier and more accurately.
- Precise diagnoses: Combine metabolic function data with anatomical visuals for greater precision.
- Comprehensive insights: Provide critical information to guide treatment planning and monitoring.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound, also called sonography, uses high-frequency sound waves (no radiation) to create real-time images of the body. We provide:
- Soft tissue imaging: To visualize muscles, tendons and internal organs like the thyroid, kidneys and liver.
- Diagnostic exams: Commonly used for breast, abdominal, pelvic, vascular, musculoskeletal and gynecologic evaluations.
- A comfortable experience: Performed by skilled technologists using safe, non-invasive techniques.
- Same-day results: Our radiologists interpret your ultrasound results the same day for timely care.
X-ray Exams
X-ray imaging is the cornerstone of radiology, providing essential diagnostic information about both bone and soft tissues. Key features include:
- Comprehensive exams: Digital X-rays for the chest, abdomen, extremities and more.
- Accurate diagnoses: Detect broken bones, arthritis, infections and other conditions.
- Advanced technology: Images are displayed electronically for quick and precise evaluation by our expert radiologists.
- Patient-centered care: Our skilled team ensures a smooth and stress-free experience.
