Using advanced imaging technologies like CT, MRI, PET/MRI and ultrasound, we provide precise and comprehensive care. Our services include specialized procedures such as:
- PET/MRI for staging rectal cancer
- Virtual Colonoscopy (CT Colonography) for colorectal cancer screening
- MRI and CT Enterography for detailed imaging of the intestines
- Dynamic Pelvic Floor MRI Imaging for pelvic health
- Ultrasound-guided thyroid biopsies
We also offer cutting-edge techniques like hepatic MRI with specialized contrast agents and pharmacodynamic MR cholangiopancreatography for detailed liver and pancreas imaging.
Advanced Cardiac Imaging
At Stony Brook’s Dalio Center for Cardiovascular Wellness and Preventive Research, our Advanced Cardiac Imaging division provides cutting-edge care for both adults and children. Serving Suffolk County and beyond, we offer a wide range of noninvasive imaging services to diagnose and manage heart conditions with precision and expertise.
Our services include:
- Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA): Using state-of-the-art 320-row and 64-slice scanners, we perform nearly 3,000 CCTAs annually. This advanced imaging helps diagnose coronary artery disease, assess chest pain in emergency situations and prepare for complex cardiac surgeries like Transcutaneous Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI), Atrial Fibrillation Radiofrequency Ablation, Transcatheter Endovascular Aortic Repair and Lariat procedures.
- Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMRI): With advanced Siemens and Philips scanners, including an open MRI option for comfort, we provide detailed imaging for conditions like ischemic heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.
- Innovations and accessibility: Our telemedicine services bring life-saving cardiac imaging to smaller community centers, such as Mather Memorial Hospital, where we’ve already performed over 500 emergency scans to emergency department patients. We are currently discussing how sharing of cardiovascular medical and clinical expertise can expand access even further into our communities.
Body Imaging
Our body imaging services use advanced, noninvasive diagnostic techniques like CT scans, MRI and ultrasounds to evaluate the chest, abdomen and pelvis. These state-of-the-art imaging methods allow our radiologists to detect abnormalities and perform minimally invasive procedures, reducing the need for exploratory surgeries.
Breast Imaging
At Stony Brook, breast imaging is a cornerstone of our commitment to women’s health — anchored by the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Care Center, we deliver leading-edge diagnostic and interventional services that blend innovative technology with exceptional, compassionate care. We provide advanced mammography services to support both screening and diagnostic needs. Key features include:
- Expert team: Our board-certified radiologists bring over 80 years of combined experience in women’s breast health, specializing in mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and interventional breast procedures.
- Advanced equipment: The Breast Care Center features an automated whole breast ultrasound system for early cancer detection in women with dense breast tissue. We also offer state-of-the-art MRI technology, with the anticipated addition of the Sentinelle MRI breast coil to enhance diagnostic precision.
- 3D Digital mammography: Our Advanced Imaging Centers offer 3D mammography (tomosynthesis) free of charge, ensuring access to cutting-edge technology for all patients.
- Collaborative care: Our interdisciplinary team of experts meets regularly to optimize patient care and management, ensuring a seamless and personalized experience.

General Radiology
We perform a wide range of general radiology including X-ray exams and fluoroscopy for chest, abdomen, spine, sinuses and extremities. Our advanced digital technology plays a vital role in diagnosing and evaluating a wide range of conditions, and ensures accurate and efficient results. Our general diagnostic radiology services are conveniently available at multiple locations, ensuring accessible, high-quality care for all patients.
Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology (IR) is a specialized field of radiology that uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases across nearly every organ system. By utilizing advanced imaging techniques such as X-ray, CT and ultrasound, our interventional radiologists perform precise procedures that minimize risk, reduce recovery time and improve health outcomes.
Stony Brook’s IR department performs over 10,000 procedures annually. We collaborate closely with departments like surgery, urology, gastroenterology and oncology to provide both emergency and elective procedures.
Common procedures include:
- Emergency care: Arterial embolization, abscess drainage and biliary interventions.
- Elective procedures: Biopsies, tumor ablations, dialysis catheter placements and chemotherapy port insertions.
- Cancer care: Liver chemoembolization, Y90 radiotherapy and other advanced interventional oncology treatments.
Our team is dedicated to offering cutting-edge care with a focus on patient comfort and outcomes.
Musculoskeletal Radiology
Musculoskeletal radiology (MSK) specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, soft tissues and spine. Our musculoskeletal radiology team is committed to providing accurate diagnoses and effective treatments, using advanced imaging technology and minimally invasive techniques. Here’s what we offer:
- Comprehensive imaging: We offer detailed imaging interpretations of MRI and CT scans, ultrasound and X-rays to accurately diagnose musculoskeletal conditions.
- Image-guided procedures: Our specialists perform image-guided injections, aspirations and biopsies to support effective treatment and diagnosis.
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine, also known as molecular imaging, provides a unique way to evaluate how the body functions by using small amounts of radioactive tracer material or radiopharmaceuticals. This innovative imaging technique allows us to assess both normal and abnormal bodily functions with precision.
A special camera captures detailed images after the radiotracer is administered, which is typically injected into a vein but may also be inhaled or ingested, depending on the specific study. Nuclear medicine can also be combined with CT or MRI to provide a comprehensive view of both function and structure.
Some of the conditions and functions evaluated with nuclear medicine include:
- Kidney function
- Heart disease
- Lung function
- Gallbladder function
- Bone fractures
- Cancer
- Internal bleeding or infection
We use nuclear medicine to deliver accurate, functional insights that support effective diagnosis and treatment.
Neuroradiology
Neuroradiology plays a critical role in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, spine and nervous system. Our specialized neuroradiologists use advanced imaging techniques to provide accurate diagnoses and support effective treatment plans. Our services include:
- Advanced imaging: Using MRI and CT scans, our neuroradiologists focus on the brain, head and spine to identify and evaluate neurological conditions.
- Spine radiology: Our spine radiologists specialize in diagnosing and treating disorders of the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back) and lumbar (lower back) spine. They utilize MRI, CT scans, ultrasound and X-rays to provide precise imaging interpretations.
- Pain management: Spine radiologists also perform targeted injections to help manage spine-related pain.
- Collaborative care: After interpreting imaging or performing procedures, our radiologists communicate promptly and effectively with your doctor to ensure seamless, coordinated care.
Pediatric Radiology
Our pediatric radiology services prioritize the safety and well-being of our youngest patients by using low-dosage imaging techniques. Our goal is to deliver high-quality images while keeping radiation exposure as minimal as possible, especially for children.
We take a personalized approach to care, tailoring every procedure to meet the unique needs of each patient. As proud members of the Image Gently and Image Wisely initiatives we are committed to minimizing radiation exposure for all patients while maintaining the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy.
