Opened in early 2014, the MRI Suite on the fourth floor of Stony Brook University Hospital makes MRI imaging even more comfortable and convenient for patients. The suite includes a Siemens Magnetom Skyra 3T MRI scanner and a Siemens Magnetom Aera Dot 1.5T MRI scanner. Both are top-of-the-line, open bore machines that deliver accurate, efficient readings with maximum patient comfort. The wide bore is ideal for larger individuals or those with mild claustrophobia who may find the more traditional closed MRI technology challenging. It also allows for additional specialty testing, for example musculoskeletal, abdominal, neuro, diffusion work and specific sequences, because technologists can better position the body to capture images.
The suite is spacious and patient-friendly, with two 400-square-foot MRI rooms, a centrally located 200-square-foot control room and a 360-square foot contrast/prep waiting are with three bed bays. Having MRI technology so close at hand for hospitalized patients offers an additional advantage of speed and accessibility when making diagnoses or when patient conditions change rapidly.
Our imaging teams are led by highly experienced board-certified radiologists and imaging specialists. We use a digital picture archiving and communications system (PACS) for immediate access for radiologists and clinicians, as well as provide a CD of study images to referring physicians. All this helps ensure an efficient and smooth patient experience as well as timely communication.
Making this latest generation imaging available to the community only makes sense because Stony Brook is the birthplace of MRI technology. We continue to update our technology as it becomes available because we believe the most advanced diagnostic tools result in better outcomes.
